The UPSC Civil Services Examination, often hailed as one of the most prestigious and challenging competitive exams in India, serves as the gateway to a career in the esteemed Indian Administrative Service (IAS), as well as other prestigious civil services such as the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Police Service (IPS), and Indian Revenue Service (IRS), among others. The UPSC Civil Services Examination consists of three successive stages:
1. Preliminary Examination:
The first stage of the UPSC IAS exam, the Preliminary Examination, is an objective-type test conducted to screen candidates for the Main Examination. It comprises two papers: General Studies Paper-I and General Studies Paper-II (also known as the Civil Services Aptitude Test or CSAT). The General Studies Paper-I evaluates candidates’ knowledge of current events, history, geography, Indian polity, economics, environmental ecology, science and technology, and general mental ability. 2. Main Examination:
Candidates who qualify the Preliminary Examination proceed to the Main Examination, which consists of a written test and an interview. The Main Examination evaluates candidates’ depth of understanding, critical analysis, and ability to express themselves effectively. It comprises nine papers, out of which seven are considered for ranking and two are qualifying in nature:

– General Studies I (Indian Heritage and Culture, History, and Geography of the World and Society)
– General Studies II (Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice, and International Relations)
– General Studies III (Technology, Economic Development, Biodiversity, Environment, Security, and Disaster Management)
– General Studies IV (Ethics, Integrity, and Aptitude)
– Optional Subject Paper I
– Optional Subject Paper II
– Indian Language (Qualifying)
– English (Qualifying)
3. Interview (Personality Test):
Candidates who qualify the Main Examination are called for the Interview, also known as the Personality Test. This stage assesses candidates’ personality traits, leadership qualities, communication skills, and overall suitability for a career in the civil services. The interview panel comprises experienced bureaucrats and subject matter experts who evaluate candidates based on their understanding of various issues, decision-making abilities, and ethical conduct.
The final selection of candidates is based on their performance in the Main Examination and Interview, subject to meeting the eligibility criteria and cut-off marks set by the UPSC. Successful candidates are then allocated to various civil services based on their rank and preferences.
